How to scan a grocery receipt

Updated October 2026 · 2 min read

Quick answer

Take one photo of your receipt. Plenishly reads the store, the total and the items, then updates your budget and your pantry.

Take the photo

Lay the receipt flat in good light. Fit the whole thing in the frame, top to bottom. Long receipts can go in two photos.

Check what it read

You will see the store, the total and each item. Fix anything that looks off before you save. Hard-to-read lines are flagged.

What it updates

  • Your budget, with what you actually spent.
  • Your pantry, with the food and a guess at how long it keeps.

How many scans you get

The free plan includes three receipt scans a month. Paid plans have unlimited scans.

Tip

Scan on the way in the door while the bags are still on the counter. It takes less time than putting away one shelf.

Why scan receipts at all?

A receipt is the most honest record of what you spent. Most people guess their grocery spending, and the guess is usually low. One photo turns a piece of paper into a budget line and a pantry list, so you stop doing it by hand.

How do you get a clean scan?

Good light and a flat receipt do most of the work.

DoSkip
Lay the receipt flat on a tableHolding it up in the air
Use daylight or a bright kitchen lightDim light that makes the print fade
Keep all four corners in the frameCropping the total or the store name
Split a very long receipt in two photosSqueezing it into one blurry shot

What should you check after the scan?

Look at the total first. If it matches the bottom of your receipt, the rest is probably right. Then scan down the items for odd names. Stores use short codes, and a few will look strange. Fix the ones that matter most, which are usually the big items.

What does a receipt tell you about your spending?

After a month of scans you can see patterns. Many families find a few categories take more than they expected: snacks, drinks, packaged convenience foods and meat. You do not need to feel bad about it. You just need to know, and then choose.

How do you keep the habit?

Scan at the door. The bags are on the counter, the receipt is in your hand, and it takes less than a minute. If you wait, the receipt ends up in a coat pocket.

What about privacy?

Receipts can show what you buy and where you shop. Plenishly does not sell your information. If you want a receipt removed, write to hello@plenishly.com and we will help.
